Understanding DNA Testing in Dogs

One of the most misunderstood areas of canine genetics is DNA "Breed Inclusion" testing.


Many people assume that a DNA breed report provides an exact history of every breed that has contributed to a dog. Unfortunately, genetics is far more complex than that.


For example, if you DNA test a German Shepherd, the report may identify small percentages of breeds that have never knowingly been introduced into that dog's pedigree.

Likewise, if you DNA test every puppy from the same litter, you may find that each puppy receives a slightly different breed composition report—even though they share the same parents.


Does this mean the breeder has been dishonest?

Absolutely not.


It simply demonstrates how complex inheritance is and how breed ancestry testing works. Each puppy inherits a unique combination of DNA from its parents, and ancestry reports are statistical estimates based on comparison with a company's reference database.

Different laboratories may even produce different ancestry reports for the very same dog.


This is why, we do not use breed ancestry reports to determine the integrity of our Tamaruke breeding program.


Instead, we use DNA testing for what it does exceptionally well—identifying inherited health conditions, genetic diversity, and genetic compatibility between breeding dogs.


Our DNA testing schedule is developed in consultation with our genetic consultant and is based on the disorders that may potentially occur within the Tamaruke population.

For example, you would not routinely screen a Tamaruke for every condition known to occur in every breed.

Testing is targeted, evidence-based, and relevant to the genetics of the breed being managed.


DNA testing is an invaluable tool when used correctly. It helps responsible breeders make informed breeding decisions, improve the long-term health of a breed, and reduce the likelihood of inherited disease.
